I hadn't heard of this, but alerted by you, I have now searched out and purchased such a limited edition Marmite. It now sits on my bookshelf. Any recommendations on what to do next? Eat it? Yes, the Huffingtons have it about right. There are some stunning independent bookshops in the UK, and mostly they're surviving by playing to their strengths. Some of my favourites: Jaffé and Neil, Chipping Norton; Much Ado Books, Alfriston; Topping and Company, Bath and Ely; Daunt Books, London.

I agree with you. It's fun to run down the answer to a question that's strolled into your head and sat down looking vaguely interesting. But also, to some extent, pointless. On the one hand, all knowledge is knowledge and not to be shunned, but on the other? A bit like a crossword or a sudoku; pleasureable while you're doing it, but then, so what?
I think the difference - is having a point to it, so that it's not, er, pointless.
If I can end a googling session with a summary - that I now know something I didn't know before and that's made a difference to my life, then it was time well spent. But aimless, directionless playing around, is just that. For me, the trick is to have something particular to research. Then the internet is just fab.

On a scale of 1-5, I'd give it 4 Quiffs. I loved the way that plot threads and incidents from three Tintin stories were woven into one coherent adventure. I loved the spectacle and action, particularly the scenes in Morocco and the flying boat. Captain Haddock had not been deprived of his whisky.

I did find the characters very slightly creepy - it's that neither one nor t'other feel that's a bit weird. Funny how I can relate to 2D cartoons better - maybe it's my age.

They're a bit better at this stuff here in Germany than in the UK. I think older people who didn't grow up with sell-by dates can give everyone a good example here. My Mum takes no notice of them whatsoever - they're too small to read anyway!
But I do have limits - was offered some jam once that someone's granny had made - all very well, but the granny had died at least 20 years previously!

What happened to the old-fashioned way of telling when food was off, common sense? Sniff it? Look at the colour/texture? Run it under the tap and try again?

I was given a set-top digi-box thingy for Christmas (last) to let the vast world of TV into my living room. I already have five terrestrial channels and I don't have the time or inclination to watch everything as it is.
I have yet to take the digi-thingy out of the box (it's August) and squint at the instructions.
I languidly await the implanting of 'desire' - that great big missing widget.
If I wait long enough, it'll be obselete then I won't have to bother.
